Caring for Rose Gold — Cleaning, Protecting, Preservi

A piece of jewellery crafted from 18 karat rose gold is made to last a lifetime — but how it ages is largely in your hands. This guide answers the questions we are asked most often.

Does Rose Gold Tarnish?

The good news first: genuine 18 karat rose gold does not tarnish like silver. Its rosy hue comes from a precise measure of copper in the alloy — and that composition is inherently stable. What many mistake for tarnishing is simply a thin film of skin oils, creams, perfume or soap residue that dulls the lustre. A gentle cleaning removes it completely. With inferior alloys containing too much copper, however, real discolouration can occur — which is why the purity of the alloy matters so much.

How Do I Clean Rose Gold at Home?

You do not need a specialist product. Add a few drops of mild soap to a bowl of lukewarm water, soak the piece for a few minutes, then clean it with a soft brush — a soft, worn toothbrush works perfectly, especially around diamond settings. Rinse with clear water afterwards and pat dry with a lint-free cloth. Avoid ultrasonic devices, harsh cleaners or toothpaste: they can scratch the surface or loosen the setting of mounted stones.

"Jewellery does not age from being worn, but from being neglected."

Restoring the Sparkle of Diamonds

A diamond never loses its brilliance — but it can hide it behind a layer of everyday residue. Since diamonds attract grease, the same gentle soap solution is all it takes to bring back the sparkle. When cleaning, take care not to bend the setting, and occasionally check with your fingernail that the stone is still secure.

The Right Daily Habits

Jewellery should be the last thing you put on in the morning and the first thing you take off at night. Perfume, hairspray and creams leave residues — put your jewellery on only after these have been absorbed. During exercise, in the swimming pool (chlorine!), in seawater and during housework, fine jewellery should be removed. These small routines extend the beauty of your piece by years.

Proper Storage

Store each piece separately and softly cushioned — ideally in a fabric pouch or a lined compartment. This prevents harder stones from scratching softer surfaces, or delicate chains from tangling. Protect 18K pieces from prolonged moisture and direct sunlight.

When Should a Professional Step In?

We recommend having every worn piece checked at the atelier once a year: settings are inspected, brilliance refreshed, and minor tensions resolved before they become real damage. A broken chain or a loosened setting is no cause for alarm — but it is a reason not to wait too long. At Rosé.
